Death of Ampelos
Ingrid Yeung
& the child cries for his mother
as if this will save him.
His shoulders are carved of tender, hollow bone;
you have heard this story before.
Bury him in a coat of wildgrass & calla-lily. Watch
his reckless joy as he dances back to life
& the wind bursts across his forehead,
some kind of baptism
or drowning.
The stars are bright fires in his eyes.
The wheat will be harvested tomorrow,
tomorrow, tomorrow again—
